“I'll tell you what FREEDOM is to me. NO FEAR.
I mean really… NO FEAR!”
— Nina Simone (from an interview by Peter Rodis in New York, 1968)
OUR INSPIRATION
When trying to come up with the words to describe OUR TRUTH, we were deeply inspired by Black Space and how they described THEIR TRUTH. Their words shaped and gave us the confidence to stand in OUR TRUTH.
*Black Space is NOT an affiliate of The Mind of Milan, LLC — I do think highly of them, hence, the shout out.
OUR TRUTH
We are Black advocates, educators, activists, and designers working to produce, provide, protect and create brave spaces for creativity, inclusivity, and community where we currently live, have never lived, and/or are struggling to live.
Our work environments includes and range from the educational service sector (K-12 schools, continuation schools, community colleges, 4-year universities, educational authorities, teacher training institutions, etc), the social sector (nonprofits, social businesses, political organizations, religious organizations, unincorporated community groups, etc), and the for profit business sector (executive coaching, leadership development.
Our work includes workshops, keynotes, curriculum design, design thinking, design work, executive coaching, leadership coaching, theory of change, and more.
We don’t perform miracles. We help you identify and embrace the reality of problems and how the problems you have, came to be — in order to rectify the probelem. We help you to navigate the journey of healing + collaborate with you toward an attainable solution.
OUR COMMITMENT
It is HOW we do, what we do, that is the ultimate metric to establish the healthiest and most productive working relationships.
We push ourselves, our partners, and our work further from the margins and closer to a community-centered ideology and framework that is built for the future we hope for and not the past we witnessed.
While we believe describing what we do is important to helping you formulate whether we are the right team + best for your needs, we firmly believe it is HOW we do what we do that is most critical and sets us apart from any other.
An essential component of our HOW framework is the Mind of Milan belief in constantly and critically reviewing, reflecting, and reassessing our past, present, and future goals, wins, challenges.
We don’t see losses or failures, we see HOW we might calculate approaches to examining our growth as an organization, your growth as a partner, and our authentic engagement with community + community partners.
We work like our ancestors are watching and like our lives are on the line…because they are.
OUR VOICE
“One of the dangers we face in our educational systems is the loss of a feeling of COMMUNITY, not just the loss of closeness among THOSE WHOM WE WORK WITH our STUDENTS, but also the loss of a feeling of CONNECTION and closeness with THE WORLD BEYOND THE ACADEMY.”
Bell Hooks (1952-2021)
